Athletic Sports

The summer period features a wide array of athletic events, including primary, intermediate and secondary schools championships, inter schools events and a Central Region meeting.

Very few centres in New Zealand can offer such a venue for schools events at a price that all schools can afford. The facilities for all track and field events are of the highest standard and encourage children to give of their best and to continue their interest in the sport.

If you can, make sure you attend your children's or grandchildren's events to encourage them in their efforts, particularly through their school's meetings.

 
The Velodrome
 

velodrome.jpgCooks Gardens contains New Zealand’s first wooden cycling velodrome, which was built in 1994 and has been host to many international, national and local events. A number of national records have been set on the track. The fast track and Wanganui’s very favourable climate have resulted in several overseas cycling teams using the venue for training.

 

cycling.jpgWanganui has a very strong Cycling Club, with many internationally qualified coaches and officials and excellent training facilities resulting in one of the strongest cycling centres in the country.

 

Investigations are presently being made into the development of the velodrome to provide a fully covered events centre, which will cater to an even wider range of sports and events.
